#336: Being a nurturer May 1, 2012

I am a nurturer.  This is helpful as a wife and mother.  I like taking care of people and animals.  Luckily I get to do that a lot in taking care of my husband, son and 2 cats.  I am truly concerned for their health and well-being.  I pray for them and try to help them in any way I can.

#329: He knows exactly what’s going on in my life April 24, 2012

There is one person who knows what’s going on with me, my husband.  He knows how work is going, how home is going, how my health is, whether I’ve been sleeping well, exercising, in a good mood.  He knows exactly what’s going on in my life.

#320: Cleanliness is next to Godliness April 15, 2012

Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

2 Corinthians 7:1

Although most of the Bible references to cleanliness deal with spiritual over physical cleanliness, I know that God wants me to keep a clean house.  With all the things the Proverbs 31 wife is doing, I know that when “She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks,” some of these tasks involve cleaning her home.  Cleaning is not something I terribly enjoy but I know that while I’m doing it it’s not so bad and I love having a clean house and how it looks and smells after I clean it.  Looking into the future, I see myself focusing on de-cluttering and organizing and then cleaning will become a focus.  Of course, it’s all about balance. Cleaning is just one of the essential things in keeping up a home.  There’s also shopping, cooking, organizing, decorating, yard work, finances, etc.  All of these things need to be done.  We all excel in one or another but it all needs to get done.  I pray that I have the discipline to do all that I can and that my hands bring  balance, joy, order and harmony to my home.

#319: Having a functional home April 14, 2012

My goal is to have a functional home.  In terms of cleanliness that means balance: clean enough to be healthy and dirty enough to be happy.  :)   My husband and I work full-time and we don’t have a maid.  Between errands, chores, shopping, cooking, laundry, yard work, etc. it’s hard to get it all in.  Plus, we have been working out and we do need some down time.  So we try to have a sane and healthy approach which is do the best we can!  You can’t eat off the floor in our house but it’s not too bad!  :)

I had THE best day the Sunday before last.  Here’s what I did:

  1. Worked out
  2. Sat in whirlpool
  3. Got hair cut
  4. Sat in sun
  5. Went to dinner
  6. Watched movie Midnight in Paris

It was such a great day.  It felt like I focused on me all day.  My husband said it was a “Karyl Day” and he supported me in taking care of myself all day. Thanks husband!  :)

Last weekend my husband and I rejoined our old club.  We left about a year ago because we moved 30 minutes away.  We’re back!  It turns out that there wasn’t a better place for us closer, for that price.  We love our club.  It’s got tennis for my husband and  lots of fun things for me like swimming, water aerobics classes, Zumba, and yoga.  And of course those yucky old weights I should be lifting.  We signed up again last weekend and we’ve been nearly every day!  My goal is to go every day but at the very least: Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays.  Wish us luck!

#288: Blackberry Smoothie March 14, 2012

I am a smoothie lover.  I like all kinds: banana, spinach & fruit, peanut butter chocolate, pumpkin,  You name it – the skies the limit.  My husband is a bit more selective.  His favorite is the classic Banana-Strawberry.

One day I made a banana-blackberry smoothie.  I loved the texture of the seeds.  I handed a glass to my husband.  He probably asked what kind is it as he suspiciously looked at the color.  I probably said “Just try it,” wanting him to get his anti-oxidants.

He took a sip and said, ” You put little rocks in here.”

#284: Short Stack March 10, 2012

My husband tells me what I need to hear and makes me laugh.

I’ve gained a few pounds and have been trying to lose them.  Not too long ago was free short stack of pancakes day at IHOP.  I told my husband that we should go. We decided against it because I was already late for work and I knew there would be lines. When I was done getting dressed I walked over to him pointing out that I had lost a few pounds in my tummy but had a few more pounds to go.  He looked at me and said, “Maybe you shouldn’t have that short stack.” :)

#232: Meditating on Our Marriage Vows December 26, 2011

I hope you had a lovely Christmas!  I think it is a good idea for me to periodically check my marriage vows and remind myself about what I promised to do.  Kind of like reviewing my job description at work.  Vows are not something you say one day at the beginning of your marriage and forget about. They should live and breathe and be part of every day.  In order for that to happen, I need to revisit them.

Our vows were pretty basic.  Here they are:

I, Karyl, take you, Walter, for my lawful husband, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health, for as long as we both shall live.

So short but so profound.  We’ve got the legal part in there: lawful husband.  I get to have him in my life, in my home, in my heart.  I get to hold him, snuggle with him, be close to him.  Then there is the for better for worse part.  For better is easy.  He’s funny and smart and he makes me laugh.  He’s hardworking and reliable.  At worse he is human like the rest of us and has traits that I’m not as fond of, but “for worse” means that I try to overlook his shortcomings.  That I am patient with him and am still fan #1 in his corner through his worse times.

For richer or poorer, in good financial times and bad.  We get to work together to be financially sound and prudent. To encourage good stewardship of our wealth, time and resources and to put our heads together creatively to increase our prosperity.  In sickness and in health.  Good health is the goal.  I work to keep us healthy by buying and cooking healthy foods and urging us to exercise and take good care of ourselves.  When he is sick, I take care of him.  When I am sick, I try not to whine too much.

Most importantly, as long as we both shall live.  We are in this for life.  It’s a life sentence!  But a good one.  What God has joined together, let no man put asunder.

I send you blessing during this Christmas season and always!
