Wife: I had seen people reading the book on the subway for a long time before I read it.  I read the trilogy but liked the first book best.  We saw the original Swedish version when it first came out. We liked that a lot. I loved that the actors didn’t look like movie stars.  The English version was good but different.  It had a different feel to it.  The Swedish version felt more authentic.  There’s something about hearing the Swedish language that let’s you get a better feel for the place, sort of like listening to music from Iceland like Bjork.  Although reading subtitles can be bothersome.  I liked both versions and am glad I saw them.  It’s such a chilling and interesting story.  The book was excellent.

Husband: The two versions are easily different.  The American version is darker and more realistic.  The actor who plays Lisbeth Salander has more edge in the American version.  As far as Mikael Blomkvist’s character, who can compare to Daniel Craig?

I was surprised.  Typically remakes are not as potent as the original.  For example, Psycho, 3:10 to Yuma.  The American version was a better film.

Wife: This is a movie my husband owns.  One of the many in his vast DVD collection.  Early on in our relationship he would ask me to watch movies and I would immediately react and not like it.  Recently, he was talking about the Vikings and the Russia people.  I was interested and he said, you know that’s what The 13th Warrior is about.  So we watched it and it was great.  A little too much violence for me.  Very interesting story.

Husband:  I like this movie.  I own it and have seen it several times.  Although it is not 100% historical, it is based upon a real time in history.  I liked all the characters and the storyline.  I thought my wife would like it and am pleased that she watched it with me.

Wife: I like crime shows.  Being a Law & Order, this was right up my alley.  Although I thought it was a god movie, I had a hard time liking it.  The subject was disturbing and sometimes hard to watch.  I like Ed Norton and thought he did a great job.  It was a little long but maybe it just felt that way because we started it too late!

Husband:  It was a good film but I found it to be disturbing.  I was happy with the outcome.

Wife: I get the feeling the book was excellent.  The movie? Not so much.  The acting was spectacular but it was hard to follow the story.  There were too many languages, characters, and points in time.  It was confusing and slow.  I watched until the end just so I could figure out if there was a mole and if so who it was.  At the end, I couldn’t tell you if there was one.  My advice, read the book!

Husband: I didn’t even bother to ask husband what he thought.  He watched only an hour then gave up.  He said it was slow and boring and said Lamo (as in lame) about 15 times during that hour.

My husband usually takes me to the subway at 6:45 a.m.  The other morning I was ready and standing near the front door with my coat on, my bag on my arm and my hands folded.  My husband who was not quite ready yet said, “You can sit down.  You don’t have to stand there looking like Nanny McPhee.”  :)

By the way, I happen to love that movie.  Watch it if you get a chance.

Wife:  This movie is really about the maid of honor and it is more about friendship than marriage. But I’m a sucker for wedding movies so there you have it.  It was very funny. I love Maya Rudolph, she is so naturally funny, earthy and quirky.  The themes of the movie are friendship, believing in yourself, loving yourself, and competition between friends.  Kristen Wiig‘s character is so very likeable.  Melissa McCarthy‘s character is crude but hilarious.  (Warning: there are definitely some unladylike scenesand foul language in this movie).  However, very funny movie.

Husband: I thought it was hilarious at times and contrived at others.  Melissa McCarthy stole the show.  She was the funniest but was not the focus of the movie.  This movie was better than The Hangover.

Husband-Wife Compatibility Rating: 8 (Wife gave it a 10, husband gave it a 6).

Wife: I loved it.  I had forgotten it was a Woody Allen movie but was reminded by the opening shots.  Allen clearly loves Paris the way he loves New York.  It’s an enchanting story – funny, beautiful, romantic.  Owen Wilson was great.  A magical story about Paris in the 20s.  Kathy Bates is a perfect Gertrude Stein.

Husband: It was creative.  I liked the cameos by historical figures.

Husband-Wife Compatibility Rating: 7 (Wife gave it a 9, Husband a 5.  It was romantic enough for Wife but not funny enough for husband).

Wife: This was a very scary and creepy movie.  It had an old-fashioned feel to it.  This movie was produced by Guillermo del Toro who also produced Pan’s Labyrinth – another great movie.  I am not a big fan of horror but this was really horror-lite.  I do love thrillers though. My husband loves both horror an thrillers which probably explains our high compatibility rating.  The little creatures were terrifying.  Very enjoyable in a scary way!

Husband: Great!  A very creative scary movie.  Katie Holmes did a nice job.

Wife: I saw the previews and wanted to see it because I couldn’t figure out was going on and wanted to.  It had that indie feel to it.  Plus I like thrillers.  I thought it was good.  It was very tense.  The writing and acting were great.  Pretty scary stuff.  Cults are just creepy!  I thought Elizabeth Olsen was wonderful in the role.  I didn’t realize until after that she is younger sister to the Olsen twins.

Husband: It was weird.  The ending was terrible and ridiculously abrupt almost as if they ran out of film.  It was also slow and long.

Wife’s Note: Husband watched this movie the way I have watched March Madness: while “doing other things.” :)

Wife: As with many spy movies, this movie had a fast pace.  It was exciting and intriguing.  What I most liked was all the human dynamics.  The plot and acting were superb.  Helen Mirren is so top drawer.  Great story – great job.

Husband: I thought it was a good movie.  It was smartly done and a clever thriller.  I found all the characters believable.  Highly recommended.
