#342: Movie Mondays – The 13th Warrior May 7, 2012

Cover of "The 13th Warrior"

Cover of The 13th Warrior

Year: 1999

Genre: Action/Adventure/Fantasy

Description from http://www.IMDb.com: In AD 922, an important emissary who is banished from his homeland. The nomadic outcast comes across a band of Norse warriors who coerce him into joining them when they are summoned to fight mysterious creatures legendary for consuming every living thing in their path. Eventually surrounded by the frightening and ferocious foe, Ibn must conquer his personal fears and help battle the illusive invaders–who emerge out of the shroud of fog in the black of the night.

Wife: This is a movie my husband owns.  One of the many in his vast DVD collection.  Early on in our relationship he would ask me to watch movies and I would immediately react and not like it.  Recently, he was talking about the Vikings and the Russia people.  I was interested and he said, you know that’s what The 13th Warrior is about.  So we watched it and it was great.  A little too much violence for me.  Very interesting story.

Husband:  I like this movie.  I own it and have seen it several times.  Although it is not 100% historical, it is based upon a real time in history.  I liked all the characters and the storyline.  I thought my wife would like it and am pleased that she watched it with me.

Husband-Wife Compatibility Rating: 9.5

I get so excited sometimes when I am sharing new facts I’ve learned or sharing something new with another person.  Recently, I was telling my husband some such set of facts.  I thought they were interesting.  I’m sure he was driving and trying to pay attention on the road.  I was having what he calls a passenger party over in the passenger seat.  Because I can go long stretches without hearing a peep from him I wanted to check in.

I turned to my husband and said, “Isn’t that interesting?”

He said, “Yes, Karyl, that’s interesting.  Tell me more.” :)

#325: Being his best friend

My husband is my best friend.  That is different from being my BFF.  BFFs are girls.  I have one of those too.  But my husband will always be my best friend, my better half.  :)

#324: He’s a Mama’s Boy April 19, 2012

My husband really loved his Mom.  They always say, marry a man who loves his mother.  It tells you how he feels about women and shows how he’ll treat women.  My husband’s Mom passed away but of course he still loves her.  I love her too even though I never got the chance to meet her.  I love her because my husband does, because she raised a great guy, and because she was a loving and lovely Christian woman.

#321: Movie Mondays – Bridesmaids April 16, 2012

Bridesmaids (2011 film)

Bridesmaids (2011 film) (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Year: 2011

Genre: Comedy/Romance

Description from http://www.IMDb.com: Competition between the maid of honor and a bridesmaid, over who is the bride’s best friend, threatens to upend the life of an out-of-work pastry chef.

Wife:  This movie is really about the maid of honor and it is more about friendship than marriage. But I’m a sucker for wedding movies so there you have it.  It was very funny. I love Maya Rudolph, she is so naturally funny, earthy and quirky.  The themes of the movie are friendship, believing in yourself, loving yourself, and competition between friends.  Kristen Wiig‘s character is so very likeable.  Melissa McCarthy‘s character is crude but hilarious.  (Warning: there are definitely some unladylike scenesand foul language in this movie).  However, very funny movie.

Husband: I thought it was hilarious at times and contrived at others.  Melissa McCarthy stole the show.  She was the funniest but was not the focus of the movie.  This movie was better than The Hangover.

Husband-Wife Compatibility Rating: 8 (Wife gave it a 10, husband gave it a 6).

#317: Apologizing April 12, 2012

One thing I love about marriage is apologizing. It’s a little like broccoli and exercise. It might not be the most fun and appealing thing but after you do it you know it was good for you and the right thing to do. I used to apologize while still really arguing. For example, “I’m sorry but I did that because I’ve been so tired lately.”  It’s a good idea to leave buts out of an apology. They bring the focus back to you instead of on the other person. The whole point of apology is that you have hurt, offended, or wronged someone. You know what you did and you want to tell them. So apologize when you are ready. Know what you are apologizing for. It’s ok to just say sorry. But it’s even better to be specific. “I’m sorry for ______.”

Afterwards you may feel better but not necessarily. You may still be mad, either at yourself or the other person.  That’s ok.  But as soon as you recognize that you did wrong and how, and as soon as you can (you might have to push yourself a little) say you are sorry. Afterwards you will at least feel like you did the right thing and have taken a step towards holiness. Don’t expect anything in return from your apology. You might get a thank you, you might not. That’s not your problem or concern. You do the right thing and leave it at that.

#314: Movie Mondays – Midnight in Paris April 9, 2012

Midnight in Paris

Year: 2011

Genre: Comedy/Fantasy/Romance

Description from http://www.IMDb.com: A family travel to the French capital for business. The party includes a young engaged couple who are forced to confront their differing views of a perfect life.

Wife: I loved it.  I had forgotten it was a Woody Allen movie but was reminded by the opening shots.  Allen clearly loves Paris the way he loves New York.  It’s an enchanting story – funny, beautiful, romantic.  Owen Wilson was great.  A magical story about Paris in the 20s.  Kathy Bates is a perfect Gertrude Stein.

Husband: It was creative.  I liked the cameos by historical figures.

Husband-Wife Compatibility Rating: 7 (Wife gave it a 9, Husband a 5.  It was romantic enough for Wife but not funny enough for husband).

#305: The Walter Show March 31, 2012

Have you seen the Ronald karaoke Geico commercial?  If you haven’t you should.

Anyway, the other morning my husband Walter started singing the Ronald song.  He was cracking me up.  A few minutes later I said, “Sing the Ronald song again.”  He said, ” You’re always asking me to do things.  Sing this song.  Make this sound.  Do this.  Do that.  I’m like, no.  You’re always wanting to watch the Walter show.”

Well, yes!  Of course I am.  When you have a husband as funny as mine, you want to watch he Walter Show all – day -  long.  He’s my favorite show!
