#357: Tribute to a married couple – Ron and Jan May 22, 2012
This is a tribute to other married couples in general and to my cousins Ron and Jan in particular. Here’s a picture from their 30th wedding anniversary party. We were fortunate to be able to celebrate with them. They have been a role model to me. They are beautiful people separately and of course together. I love you guys, wish you continued happiness and thank you for your example!

When we were courting, I told my husband that I was looking for someone to stay. He told me that he wanted to stay and that he would. He still tells me, “I will never leave you.” I believe him.

The day was August 8, 2006. We had met 5 months earlier on St. Patrick’s Day. He picked me up from the Van Ness subway stop. He did that every day. That afternoon he had asked my mother for permission to propose to me. I saw him in the car and walked over. He got out of the car and came around to the passenger side as if to open the door for me. He got down on one knee and had the ring in its box. He said, “Will you marry me?” I said, “Yes.” Then I said, “Are you going to be able to get up?”

Wife: This movie is really about the maid of honor and it is more about friendship than marriage. But I’m a sucker for wedding movies so there you have it. It was very funny. I love Maya Rudolph, she is so naturally funny, earthy and quirky. The themes of the movie are friendship, believing in yourself, loving yourself, and competition between friends. Kristen Wiig‘s character is so very likeable. Melissa McCarthy‘s character is crude but hilarious. (Warning: there are definitely some unladylike scenesand foul language in this movie). However, very funny movie.
Husband: I thought it was hilarious at times and contrived at others. Melissa McCarthy stole the show. She was the funniest but was not the focus of the movie. This movie was better than The Hangover.
Husband-Wife Compatibility Rating: 8 (Wife gave it a 10, husband gave it a 6).

Wife: I loved it. I had forgotten it was a Woody Allen movie but was reminded by the opening shots. Allen clearly loves Paris the way he loves New York. It’s an enchanting story – funny, beautiful, romantic. Owen Wilson was great. A magical story about Paris in the 20s. Kathy Bates is a perfect Gertrude Stein.
Husband: It was creative. I liked the cameos by historical figures.
Husband-Wife Compatibility Rating: 7 (Wife gave it a 9, Husband a 5. It was romantic enough for Wife but not funny enough for husband).
#291: St. Patty, Patron Saint of My Marriage March 17, 2012

St. Patrick has always brought good luck, love and blessings to my marriage. Here are just a few things:
1) I first returned to the Catholic faith of my upbringing about 7 or 8 years ago. I started attending St. Patrick’s church in downtown DC. It’s right near my office. I started praying for a husband in that very church.
2) A few years later, I had my first date with my husband. On St. Patrick’s Day.
3) A year ago, we bought our first house. The house closed. On St. Patrick’s Day.
So it’s not a ton of things, but they are a few very significant things. I believe that St. Patrick watches over my marriage. Who knows what else he has in store for my marriage?
